EPL Saturday Night Review

Ruud Van Nistelrooy’s explosive start to this years Premier League campaign continued, as he scored the only goal in Manchester United’s 1-0 win over Aston Villa at Old Trafford.

Villa’ keeper Thomas Sorensen kept the visitors in the game, with a string of excellent saves as he continually denied United the goal they deserved.

Just on half time, Sorensen produced his best save of the match when he parried United midfielder Park-Ji-Sung’s brutal drive onto the bar.

However, United scored the goal they deserved when after 66 minutes, Van Nistelrooy met Cristiano Ronaldo’s cross at the far post and duly buried the ball into the back of the net.

Goals from Jermain Defoe and Mido have sent Tottenham to the top of the English Premier League, courtesy of a 2-0 win over Middlesborough.

Spurs, a side who have under-achieved in recent years look set to make a charge for a European place this season, and a strong home win has them sitting pretty in 1st position.

Blackburn Rovers held on for a 2-1 win at home to Fulham with the win lifting the Rovers out of the relegation zone. Danish dynamo winger Morten Gamst Pedersen opened the scoring with a cracking strike, after good build-up by Finnish target man Shefki Kuqi.

Fulham were good enough to reply, after 49 minutes through Brian McBride and it seemed the match was heading for a draw, only for Ewood Park to erupt when Tugay struck the winning goal.

A double from Geoff Horsfield has seen West Brom record a 2-1 home win over Portsmouth at The Hawthorns.

Big man Horsfield gave Albion the perfect start when he scored after just 2 minutes to ignite the home crowd into action.

Horsfield was on the scoresheet again, this time after 59 minutes when he opened up a 2 goal lead for the hosts.

Despite a consolation goal, from ex-Magpie Laurent Robert, it was to no avail as West Brom held on for a vital win.

Spaniard Xabi Alonso scored the only goal in Liverpool’s 1-0 win over a ten-man Sunderland at Anfield.

Alonso’s goal came at the 24 minute mark, but after the first goal despite their best attempts the Reds could not extend their advantage.

A goal from Darren Bent was enough to give Charlton a 1-0 win over Wigan, whilst Newcastle and a 10-man West Ham fought out a goalless draw at St James’s Park.
