Star striker Brian Deane was unveiled as Perth Glory’s major signing on Monday morning ahead of the club’s
Hyundai A-League kick-off against Central Coast Mariners this Friday.
The experienced forward, widely known as ‘Deano’ since he shot to fame as a goal scoring machine with
Sheffield United in the late 1980s, is looking forward to a great new challenge with the Glory.
Standing at 6ft 3in (190cm), the powerful striker is sure to prove a massive boost for Steve McMahon’s
team as they look to start a new era of football in Australia with a bang.
"We’re pleased he is here, it gives everyone a boost straight away, just his presence alone; as he walks
in people see that he is a big lad," McMahon said.
"He is a big guy and he is going to cause problems, he’s here to do a job, he’s not here for a jolly-up,
which many people might think is the case, it’s not. He is a good pro and has been for many years. He’s got a
good reputation and he’s not going to let that fall by the wayside."
McMahon also stressed that Deane would give his side the ability to vary their approach to games
tactically: "There are different systems that we can play now, we’re very versatile so he gives us another
dimension to our team."
Ahead of his first training session at Members Equity Stadium, the big man spoke of his excitement at
joining Glory for the Hyundai A-League kick-off.
"For me it’s a new challenge, I suppose me and Dwight Yorke are quite well known in the UK so from that
point of view it will be a good bit of profile for the new league," Deane said.
"I have played a lot of high profile games but I am not really sure what to expect from the other teams
here so from that point of view it is a challenge, I had other options but I wanted to sample the culture here
as well."
Deane will train with his new team mates this week ahead of the big season opener against Central Coast
Mariners at Members Equity Stadium on Friday evening (8pm kick-off). With Glory losing 1-0 to the Mariners on
Saturday, Steve McMahon’s team will be determined to get the season proper off to a flying start.
All-time Glory top goal scorer Bobby Despotovski will return from suspension giving the home side’s attack
a great deal of potency alongside new recruit, Deane.
