Arsenal win on back of Henry double

Thierry Henry has gone within one goal of Arsenal champion Ian Wright’s goalscoring record of 185, bagging a brace in Arsenal’s stirring 4-1 comeback victory over Fulham.

The Frenchman’s double combined with an unlikely brace from defender Pascal Cygan paved the way for the Gunners to skyrocket into fourth position on the EPL Table.

Eight minutes in and Arsenal had made a poor start, when defender Lauren saw his spot-kick saved by on-loan goalkeeper Tony Warner.

Fulham made the Gunners pay, when Claus Jensen opened the scoring. A corner wasn’t cleared properly, and the Danish midfielder made no mistake has he smashed his shot into the back of the net.

However, what was to happen for the remainder of the game was amazing – vintage Arsenal at its best, with the form being strikingly similar to that of the 2003/04 season when they went through undefeated.

Cygan levelled the scoring with a header, before Henry gave the Gunners the lead with a superb strike. Henry then added his 2nd after a brilliant pass from midfielder Mathieu Flamini, before Cygan completed the rout by lashing home from close range.

Chelsea moved to the top of the table, courtesy of a 4-0 rout as they pummelled West Bromwich Albion into submission with another marvellous game from the reigning champions.

Frank Lampard, celebrating fatherhood capped off the birth of his daughter Luna during the week by bagging a brace as the Londoners were far to slick and polished for West Brom.

Lampard opened the scoring after 23 minutes, after a relatively low-key start to the match. After the first goal, Chelsea picked up the pace and began to create more goalscoring opportunities and moved further ahead when frustrated midfielder Joe Cole scored.

Didier Drogba then scored his 2nd goal in successive games when he turned a corner into the back of the net, and the demolition was completed when Lampard struck his 2nd goal and made the margin 4-0.

Bolton were far too good for a disappointing Newcastle, with the Wanderers winning 2-0 at the Reebok Stadium.

Newcastle’s start to the season is somewhat akin to the commencement of Leeds United’s 2003/04 year where as a big club, the Yorkshiremen with several high earners on the payroll, saw their club free-fall into debt.

The Geordies have already spent their fair share of cash this summer, but are still looking at a loan deal for Michael Owen, as they haven’t scored so far this year and are significantly lacking firepower up front.

The Wanderers two goals came from Greek midfielder Stelios Giannakopoulos and El-Hadji Diouf as they dominated a disappointing Newcastle effort.

And at Ewood Park, Australian Lucas Neill was sent from the field in a heated clash with Spurs midfielder Edgar Davids, as Blackburn and Tottenham played out a 0-0 draw.

The Rovers had the better of the match, with several good chances but were denied by Spurs England keeper’ Paul Robinson who is in excellent touch at the moment.
