Matt Giteau to miss Auckland Test

Australian Rugby Wallabies inside back Matt Giteau has been ruled out of next Saturday’s final Tri Nations Test against New Zealand in Auckland with a lower back injury.

Giteau, who joined the squad in camp in Coffs Harbour yesterday but did not train, first injured his back against the All Blacks in Sydney, and then took another knock to the same area in Perth last weekend against the Springboks.

Wallaby Coach Eddie Jones says Giteau is improving, but would not be fit in time to travel to Auckland with the team on Thursday.

“Matt showed an enormous amount of courage to get through the Test in Perth and while he’s made some improvements, it’s not enough to ensure he’ll be available for selection,” said Jones.

“He will return to Canberra today, and continue to receive treatment on the injury. Depending on how he responds to treatment he could be out for anywhere between one to five weeks, so the rest will do him good.”

With both Giteau and Flatley ruled out, Jones says the Wallabies may consider adding another inside back to the squad.

“While the injuries are disappointing, they do present us with some opportunities,” said Jones.

“Lachlan MacKay trained with the squad for the first time yesterday and trained well. As for a replacement we’ll have a look at what other inside back options are available overnight, and then make a decision on whether or not we bring someone in tomorrow.”

In other injury news, hooker Stephen Moore is the main concern for the Wallabies at the moment with an injury to his lower leg. Moore complained of discomfort in his leg during training yesterday and had x-rays today clearing him of any structural damage.

Wallaby medical staff will continue to monitor his progress over the coming days, while prop Matt Dunning (lower back) will not train this afternoon.

The Wallabies will name their team to play New Zealand on Wednesday.
