Stosur and Arthurs in day two action

Wayne Arthurs and Samantha Stosur are the only Australians in action on day two of the US Open with Lleyton Hewitt and Mark Philippoussis not scheduled to get their 2005 campaigns underway until day three.

Samantha Stosur will be looking to join Nicole Pratt in the second round when she takes on Chinese qualifier Tiantian Sun whom Stosur has already met twice this year, emerging victorious on both occasions.

Wayne Arthurs takes on Italy’s Davide Sanguinetti in his opening match, with the pair’s last encounter back in 2002 when the big serving Victorian took the honours on grass at Nottingham. Arthurs reached the fourth round at the US Open back in 2000 but has been unable to recapture that form, going out in the first round in the past four years.

In day one action, Nicole Pratt advanced to the second round when her opponent Akiko Morigami retired, clearly in distress, with the match poised at one set apiece. Pratt, who lost the first set in a tiebreaker, now faces the USA’s Laura Granville who convincingly eliminated the No.22 seed Silvia Farina Elia 6-2 6-1.

Alicia Molik was not so lucky, with the effects of her lack of match practice and prolonged layoff through an inner ear infection, clearly showing. This was only her third match since April and the former world No.8 was defeated in straight sets by American wildcard Shenay Perry 6-4 6-4.

In the men’s draw, Peter Luczak, who came through qualifying to make his first Grand Slam appearance outside Australia, got off to a flying start taking the first set off Tommy Haas before the former World No.2 showed the form that took him to the quarterfinals at Flushing Meadows last year when he took the next three sets to win 36 63 62 63.
