Hewitt and Philippoussis get underway on day three

Lleyton Hewitt opens his 2005 US Open campaign against former French Open champion Albert Costa (ESP) as the first match in Arthur Ashe Stadium on day three.

Hewitt will be hoping to go one step further than his finals appearance last year and emulate the success of 2001 when he defeated Pete Sampras at Flushing Meadows to claim his first Grand Slam singles title.

Mark Philippoussis will also be looking to emulate his former US Open achievements, having reached his first ever Grand Slam final here in 1998 in the all-Australian encounter against Pat Rafter. Philippoussis takes on former World No.6 Karol Kucera (SVK) whose best result here is the quarterfinals back in 1998.

Nicole Pratt will carry the Australian hopes into the second round of the women’s singles when she takes on the USA’s Laura Granville. The pair has met once previously with Granville currently holding the upper hand.

The doubles also gets underway on day three, with Wimbledon champion Stephen Huss (VIC) teaming up again with South Africa’s Wesley Moodie. The pair will be looking to see if they can add a second Grand Slam title to their trophy cabinet having come through qualifying at Wimbledon this year to pull off a fairytale victory in the men’s doubles.

Top seeds in the women’s doubles Rennae Stubbs (NSW), and regular partner Cara Black (ZIM), open their campaign against another Australian Lisa McShea (QLD) and Abigail Spears (USA), with Jordan Kerr (SA) the remaining Aussie on court on day three when he partners Graydon Oliver of the USA in the first round of men’s doubles.

It was a disappointing day for the Australians in singles on day two with both Samantha Stosur and Wayne Arthurs going down in straight sets.

Arthurs dropped the first two sets 6-3 6-3 to Italy’s Davide Sanguinetti before rallying slightly to take the third set to a tie breaker which he ultimately lost 7-6(3).

Samantha Stosur fared little better against her lower ranked Chinese opponent, qualifier Tiantian Sun, whom Stosur has already beaten in their previous two meetings this year.

Stosur has been struggling to find the form that saw her start the year strongly with back-to-back finals on the Gold Coast and in Sydney, and taking the mixed doubles at the Australian Open partnering fellow Queenslander Scott Draper.
