New recruits enter the Brumbies’ fray
Key off-season signings Stephen Hoiles and Julian Huxley have joined the ACT Brumbies.
The pair attended their first training session in Canberra today and have been included in the Brumbies’
squad for the upcoming Australian Provincial Championship (APC) that begins on September 8.
Hoiles, who joins the Brumbies on a two-year contract from the NSW Waratahs, says that the move south
reflects his desire to add to his two Test caps.
“The Brumbies have an excellent track record of developing players and grooming them for Test rugby,”
Hoiles said.
“With the World Cup less than a year away, I want to be putting myself in the best position to wear a
Wallaby jumper. Playing regular football with established Test players like Steve Larkham and George Gregan
can only improve my chances of making it to France next year.”
The destructive backrower has already added three kilograms to his 2006 Super 14 playing weight and says
that he is ready to impress in the inaugural APC.
“The whole concept is very exciting,” he said. “With the strong interstate rivalries and Wallaby positions
up for grabs, it’ll make for a great spectacle. I’m looking forward to running on for the Brumbies and playing the exciting brand of football that they’re renowned for.”
Meanwhile, Huxley, who made his Super Rugby debut for the Brumbies in 2002, returns to Canberra after four
seasons with the Reds.
The talented playmaker has also been signed for two years after representing Australia at Under 19, Under
21, Sevens and “A” level.
Huxley, a goalkicking utility back, says that he is looking forward to returning to Brumbies’ colours.
“It’s a very happy homecoming for me,” he said. “Canberra’s where my serious rugby began and it’s great to
be back.
“I still have personal goals of playing for the Wallabies and it’s at the Brumbies that I know my game will
develop and where these goals are most likely to be realised.
“I feel very comfortable here, playing with the Brumbies suits my style of play and it’s somewhere where I
really enjoy my rugby.”
Brumbies’ APC coach Matt O’Connor says Hoiles and Huxley will be a welcome addition to the Brumbies’
squad.
“Julian and Steve are experienced, quality players,” he said. “They’ve both been around Australian rugby
for a long time. They have unique skills and strong leadership qualities that we’ll be looking to mould into
the team fabric.”
The Brumbies kicked off their APC preparations with their first training session today.
The Brumbies take on the Waratahs in their first APC match at Viking Park on Friday September 8. Kick-off
is at 7:00pm.
