Australian Sevens go down narrowly to Argentina

Australian Rugby Australia have been edged out of the Cup draw at the George Sevens overnight, going down 14-12 to Argentina in the Quarter Final.

Argentina, who beat New Zealand yesterday, went on to defeat hosts South Africa before going down 21-19 to Fiji in the Cup Final.

The Quarter Final was a tough loss for Australia, as they played their best Sevens of the weekend in the match and had the chance to take the game. However they were unable to rebound from the loss and were beaten convincingly by Samoa in the Plate Semi Final (35-5).

Samoa went on to win the Plate Final with a 17-5 win over New Zealand.

Earlier, Australia accounted for Namibia (47-7) in their first pool match on Friday (day one), and scrapped home against Scotland (29-28) before being defeated 33-7 by an impressive Fiji.

This season's IRB Sevens series has got off to a very even start with Fiji and England neck and neck at the top of the table. New Zealand find themselves in the unfamiliar position of sixth on the points table, while Australia is in eight position.

The next two tournaments are in Wellington (3-4 February) and Los Angeles (11-12 February) before the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne on 16-17 March.
