Shaw performs well in PGS
Australia’s Johanna Shaw was the sole Australian in action on day 13 of competition at the Winter
Olympics.
Melbourne based snowboarder, Shaw competed in the Parallel Giant Slalom and qualified 15th fastest after
recording a time of 53.76 seconds on the blue course, but failed to progress past the elimination round where
she finished 29th.
Switzerland’s Daniela Meuli claimed the Gold medal, ahead of German rider Amelie Kober (silver) and the
USA’s Rosey Fletcher (bronze).
A day after claiming the bronze medal in the aerials, Alisa Camplin was presented with her medal before a
packed city square in Turin.
Despite the medal being a bronze, Camplin believes the impact was equally strong after her Gold medal in
Salt Lake four years ago.
“It was so excellent,” a beaming Camplin said on the AOC website.
“I have such small memories of Salt Lake City, I just wanted to soak it all up. It wasn’t my national
anthem, but I was so proud to be standing up there.” She continued.
Camplin had endured tough times leading up to these games and was unsure if she would be able to compete
due to another severe knee injury, which required extensive surgery but thanked all who have supported
her.
“There were lots of special people here to support me,” she said.
“Having this medal ceremony is incredibly important for the athletes. You go through a reflection period
for 24 hours then you come back and experience it all again.”
Australian team doctor, Peter Braun speaking before these games, believed that Camplin chances of winning
any medal would be hampered due to not fully recovering from her knee surgery.
“I think a medal is probably unrealistic,” he said before the Games.
She was lucky to claim the bronze medal after being in fourth position due to having a better second jump
than her first and she only earned a place on the podium after the final Chinese athlete crashed.
Australians in action on day 15 of competition are skier Jonathan Brauer in the men’s slalom, Emily
Rosemond in 1000 metres speed skating and the quartet of Elliott Shriane, Lachlan Hay, Mark McNee and Stephen
Lee in the 5000 metres relay.
