Cox the Entertainer takes out WNBL weekly prize
Her brand of basketball is exciting, and she plays like she loves the game. Townsville Fire guard, Rohanee
Cox, has been rewarded for her efforts and talent, winning her first Price Attack Women’s National Basketball
League (WNBL) Virgin Blue Player of the Week award of the season.
In her first season back since 2003, ‘Roey’ is having a career season, averaging 16.0 points and 9.2
rebounds in 30 minutes on court.
In the Fire’s Round 15 match against Perth, Cox had 27 points off 64.3% shooting, along with 12 rebounds,
to help her team to a very important and morale boosting 85-68 win.
The 182cm West Australian native started the match quietly, scoring only four points in the opening period.
This belied the explosive performance she was about to turn on in the second quarter.
Cox poured on 16 points, including two three-pointers in the second quarter, missing only one shot in her
ten minutes on court. She also grabbed seven rebounds, five at the offensive end, in a frenzied display of
top class ‘ball.
“I was a little disappointed with the team’s effort in the first quarter and I let them know it at the
break,” Townsville coach David Herbert said.
“Rohanee really stepped up to the challenge I set in the second quarter. She showed her athleticism, and
that she can score at will when she puts her mind to it.”
“Roey helped bring the crowd into the game,” he added.
“Every time she gets the ball on a fast break the crowd holds it’s collective breath in anticipation of
what she will do with it at the offensive end.”
Players of the Week are announced every Tuesday throughout the season with the 2005/06 League MVP being
presented with a trip for two courtesy of Virgin Blue and the WNBL at the end of the season.
Other players in contention for the award in Round 15 were Emma Randall (Dandenong), Deanna Smith (Perth),
Trisha Fallon (Sydney Uni) and Hollie Grima (Bulleen Melbourne).
