Victorian Premier Cricket Round 13 Review

Cricket '06 @ Sports Australia In a round of cricket where much of it was spoilt by persistent rain, Geelong is in a commanding position after Melbourne University declared rather generously at 9/198.

For the Students, Brendan Joseland fought his way to 39, and skipper Shawn Flegler also battled hard in reaching a well-compiled 38. For the Cats, fiery medium-pacer Blair Allan (5/50) destroyed Melbourne Uni's middle order in a great spell of bowling. Tim Walerys was also damaging, taking two top order wickets. In reply, the Cats are no wicket for 14 with the Dean brothers at the crease.

In other games, Dandenong and Casey-South Melbourne were evenly poised with Dandenong batting first, but losing star players Warren Ayres (14), Kumar Sarna (14) and Matty Chasemore (15) to give South a chance. All-rounder Steven Spoljaric had taken two wickets when play was abandoned at 3/65.

At Northcote, Prahran had taken an early wicket courtesty of speedster Cameron Huckett but play was abandoned with Northcote one down for 26.

North Melbourne had St Kilda on toast at 2/35 when play was abandoned with Shannon Waters and Chris Marantelli both taking a wicket for the Kangaroos.

Carlton were 1/26 when the rain hit against Footscray Edgewater, and Essendon were the same score when its game against Melbourne was washed out.

Not a ball was bowled in the remaining three games between Hawthorn-Monash University v Camberwell Magpies, Ringwood v Fitzroy-Doncaster and Frankston Peninsula v Richmond.

At the time of press, Cricket Victoria were still unsure of the scheduling for next week as most matches were rain affected. The most viable option would be to abandon all games and play a one-dayer, but nothing is set in concrete as yet.
