MATCH REPORT
Saturday January 29, 2006 Cricket - ING Cup :: Scott Smith

Lehmann magic slaughters Victoria

ING Cup 2005/06 South Australia has slipped into second position on the ING Cup ladder with one round of matches remaining following a commanding seven-wicket bonus-point victory against Victoria in Adelaide tonight.

Set 223 to win, the Redbacks cruised home in 39.5 overs, courtesy of an unconquered man-of-the-match effort of 80 from 70 balls by skipper Darren Lehmann.

Requiring 44 runs off four overs at one stage to claim the bonus point and slip into outright second, the South Australian captain lead a brutal attack on Victoria's bowlers, slamming seven boundaries - including a six - in the space of 20 deliveries.

Mark Cosgrove (89 from 90) had earlier set the Redbacks up with a solid foundation, joining in partnerships of 65 and 82 with Greg Blewett (19) and Lehmann respectively.

Shane Deitz (11) was the first to ball at 1-24, while Cosgrove fell 11 runs short of a ton at 3-171 when he was caught at fine leg by Andrew McDonald off Shane Harwood attempting to pull.

South Australia move into second spot on the table with 24 points, behind New South Wales (29 points) in first position, and ahead of Victoria (23), Western Australia (18), Tasmania (12) and Queensland (12). All teams have played nine matches.

The Redbacks play Queensland in the final round at the Gabba on February 17, while Victoria will meet Tasmania at Junction Oval on February 18.

Earlier in the day, Victorian skipper Cameron White won the toss and elected for first use on a green strip.

Jon Moss (23 from 14) took to the attack earlier, slamming a six off Jason Gillespie in only the second over of the day, and in the process, hoisting Victoria to 0-30 after four overs, before he edged Shaun Tait to Shane Deitz at first slip.

Lloyd Mash (6) and Michael Klinger (24) played unhurried, and it eventually led to their downfall - Mash caught at fine leg by Cosgrove off Gillespie at 2-52, followed by Klinger at 3-66 - caught superbly by Lehmann one-handed off Gillespie.

Cam White (28) and Dave Hussey (19) went about restoring order with a 45-run stand, before both fell in the space of nine balls and six runs - Hussey stumped by Manou off Lehmann at 4-109, while White was caught behind off Cullen Bailey the ball after launching a towering six into the member's stand.

Liam Buchanan's stay was brief when he was dismissed for six at 6-115, but Andrew McDonald and keeper Adam Crosthwaite steadied the ship with a 76-run seventh-wicket partnership.

Coupled with some glorious stroke-play and controlled aggression, the pair hoisted Victoria to 6-191 in the 44th over, denying the South Australian bowlers for over 14 overs.

However, McDonald's 41-ball innings of 47, which included four sixes, came to a abrupt halt when he was caught by Blewett at long-on off Bailey.

Crosthwaite powered his way to 43 in 56 balls, before inside edging Tait to keeper Manou, who took a blinding catch diving to his left at 8-209.

Tait cleaned up the tail, bowling both Shane Harwood (5) and Gerard Denton (2) to finish with figures of 4-32 from 8.5 overs as Victoria were skittled for 222 in the 48th over.
