Australian Garcia seals FA Cup victory for Colchester
The FA cup fourth round brought out a number of shocks and former WA player Richard Garcia scored the third
goal in Division One side Colchester United's 3-1 victory against Championship side Derby County at Layer
Road.
Neil Danns scored twice and the former Australian youth international Garcia added the third before Tommy
Smith's consolation for the Rams.
The Colchester coach Phil Parkinson was delighted with the victory. “Financially this win is great, with
Winning clubs receiving £60,000 and televised clubs receive £150,000. The league is our priority, but what the
cup run could do for us is massive," he said.
"The chairman might not have to sell anyone before Wednesday now and hopefully we will get to February 1
with our squad intact. This was a good win, Derby really came at us at the start and I would have been happy
with 0-0 at half-time, but we scored just before the break and that was a massive bonus for us."
Premier ship side Sunderland crashed out at 1st Division Brentford 2-1, to continue a horror season for
Mick McCarthy’s side. A double from Dudley Campbell was enough to send the Bees into the fifth round and Coach
Martin Allan was delighted for the striker, “He is a good player and has been working hard for three months
after coming to us from the non-league."
"There is still more to come from him and he will get much stronger. But I'm so proud of all the players,
I thought we put on a good performance and deserved to win this game,” said Allan.
For the rest of the Premier League club it was Arsenal who was the big losers, going down 1-0 to Bolton
Wanderers at the Reebok Stadium. It was Greek international Stelios Giannakopoulos who grabbed the winner as
he headed in a Ricardo Gardner cross late on when it seemed the game was destined for a draw.
It was 1-1 at Goodison Park with Premiership leaders Chelsea coming from behind to earn a replay at
Stamford Bridge. James McFadded headed home on 35 minutes and Jose Mourinho needed to gee his troops before
Lampard netted the equaliser midway through the second-half.
Everton manager David Moyes said: "I thought it was a top performance, especially given that we were
without a lot of players. They all deserve a massive pat on the back."
"We played the best side in the country and for the most part gave them a really good game. I thought it
was going to be our day but Chelsea battled back as they always do."
"Their record of winning games and getting back into games in the second half is second to none.”
Chelsea’s coach Jose Mourinho was happy after the game. “Goodison Park is a very difficult place to come at
any time and this is a good result for us. We have survived and taken the game home. That is not to say we are
already in the next round because the replay will be difficult, but it is a positive."
Another all Premiership game was won by Manchester City beating Wigan 1-0 at the City of Manchester Stadium
with a late Andy Cole strike. Wigan’s coach Paul Jewal said after the game, “I feel sick because I don't like
losing but we have had a lot of games and a replay was the last thing we needed."
On the other hand Stuart Pearce was delighted, “We set a reasonable tempo but we looked a bit nervous in
front of goal in the early stages. I think if we had taken an early lead then that would have settled us down
a bit. It looked like it had 0-0 written all over it but the chance that came fell to a top predator."
Both Liverpool and Manchester United made to the fifth round with away victories. Liverpool beat Portsmouth
2-1 at Fratton Park, while United beat Wolves 3-0 at Molineux. It was a difficult looking game for Birmingham
City who visited Championship leaders Reading at the Madejski Stadium, but the struggling Premiership side
earned a 1-1 draw.
Steve McClaren’s Middlesbough had to do with a 1-1draw against Coventry City at the Ricoh Stadium. Jimmy
Floyd Hasselbaink gave the Premiership side the lead, but Coventry hit back just ten minutes later through
Stern John.
The other Premier League side to fall was Blackburn Rovers who lost 2-4 at Upton Park against West Ham
United. But it was better for the rest of the Premier ship sides with Aston Vila beating Port Vale 3-1 at
Villa Park and Charlton who beat giant killing Leyton Orient with a late Jay Bothroyd goal.
The Charlton coach Alan Curbishley said: "We take the FA Cup very seriously but we just haven't done well
enough over the years - we're happy to get through. It seemed like we thought we'd done enough by scoring
early on, and Orient deserved their equaliser. But it was a great Cup tie, with the last 20 minutes really
end-to-end."
Graeme Souness’s Newcastle Unitedhad a difficult trip to Chelenham Town, but came out on top 2-0.
Cheltenham boss John Ward said: "We've been dignified, played well and given people a different perception of
Cheltenham - the players can be very proud. The second goal was a bit of a killer blow for us, there was an
element of good fortune about it for them. But this can be a springboard for the rest of our season - it has
to be."
Newcastle boss Graeme Souness said: "This is the only competition for us now - we're not going to win the
Premiership. Cheltenham was a credit to their division and played fantastically well - it was never
comfortable for us. You can sometimes come unstuck in games like this and we are just grateful to be in the
next round."
In other results Stoke City beat Walsall 2-1 at the Britannia Stadium. Leicester City were beaten
0-1 at The Walkers Stadium and it was 1-1 at Deepdale between Preston and Crystal Palace.
In the fifth round draw the match of the round is at Anfield where Liverpool meets Manchester United. The
two rivals were paired together in the draw for the final 16 at the FA's headquarters in London. There is
three all Premiership clashes with Newcastle hosting Southampton at St James Park, Aston villa hosting
Manchester City at Villa Park and Bolton entertaining West Ham at the Reebok Stadium.
League One sides Brentford and Colchester were both rewarded with Premiership ties, after wins against
Sunderland and Derby County. Brentford will make the short trip to the Valley to play Charlton, while
Colchester face an away tie at the winners of the Everton and Chelsea replay.

Preston/Crystal Palace v Coventry/Middlesbrough
Newcastle v Southampton
Aston Villa v Manchester City
Everton/Chelsea v Colchester
Charlton v Brentford
Liverpool v Manchester United
Bolton v West Ham
Stoke v Reading/Birmingham
Ties to be played on weekend of 18 February.
