King expresses remorse over gesture

Melbourne Storm RLFC Melbourne Storm centre Matt King has expressed his regret at the unfortunate incident that took place in the final moments of the Round 21 clash against the St George Illawarra Dragons at Oki Jubilee Stadium on Sunday.

Storm CEO Brian Waldron has spoken with King, making him aware his actions were not in the spirit of the game, and could influence those who see him as a role model.

“Matt King’s inappropriate gesture towards the crowd on Sunday is an action the Melbourne Storm take very seriously,” said Waldron.

“We, as a club have spoken to Matt and he understands his actions were wrong and unacceptable to this organisation and the game of Rugby League in general.

“Although his actions are indefensible, they are extremely out of character and he is very remorseful.”

King himself said: “I deeply regret making the gesture and I understand it is something that is unacceptable.

“It was a spur of the moment thing and I regret having taken that course of action.

“I would like to apologise to anyone who was offended by the gesture and reassure them I meant no malice or offence by it.”

Waldron said: “The Melbourne Storm are satisfied that Matt’s public apology is suffice to bring an end to this incident and no further action will be taken by the Club on this matter.”
