The second day of the Helensvale Grand Prix June 21, the shortest day of the year, provided another day of
shock losses with reigning World Outdoor Singles Champion Steve Glasson, WBT World Indoor Pairs Champion
Kelvin Kerkow and WBL Indoor Singles Champion Mark Casey all failing to get past the first round of the
singles.
Plays started on time in glorious Queensland weather but after 90 minutes of sets play on the green Glasson
and Kerkow were out of the tournament.
Glasson lost in straight sets 5/7:6/8 to Malaysian S.Said and Kerkow lost to young gun Aron Sherriff
13/3:5/7:1/2 in the 3 end tiebreak.
In the afternoon rounds Casey fell to Port Macquarie bowler Michael Burgess in straights 5/9:6/10.
Australian Open Champion Shane Globits won through to the quarterfinals on Wednesday where he will play
Western Australian Pieter Harris.
Former Victorian and seventh seed Bill Cornehls will meet Queensland singles champion Anthony Kiepe in
another quarterfinal encounter.
Australian squad member Brett Duprez will clash with Michael Burgess with the winner likely to play former
Tasmanian champion Mark Strochnetter in a semi final.
Strochnetter meets Helensvale qualifier Larry Pointer in the quarterfinal.
The finals of the Ladies Singles and the Mens Singles will be over the Internet on a LIVE scoreboard –
updated every end on Thursday June 23 on the Tweed
Heads Bowls Club website.
