Top seed Shane Globits reached the final of the Helensvale Grand Prix yesterday with straight sets wins
over Western Australian Pieter Harris 7/5:9/6 and then defeated Queensland Singles Champion Anthony Kiepe
11/6:5/5.
The 28-year-old Queenslander has already notched up the Australian Open and the Super Singles this year –
both tournaments played in the sets play format now in use for the Commonwealth Games.
Globits will play Brett Duprez from NSW in the final after Duprez came from behind to win his quarterfinal
match 1/7:9/3:2/0 against Michael Burgess and then went on to win the semi final 9/7:4/9:2/0 against Tasmanian
Mark Strochnetter.
Play in the final gets under way at 2.15pm today.
Queensland qualifier Brenda Thompson from Ipswich United Bowls Club provided the biggest upset of the
ladies event when she beat Commonwealth Gold medallist Siti Zalina Ahmad 6/7: 10/4:2/1 in the semi final and
will clash with Sydney based Arleen Jeffery.
Jeffery clinched her finals berth by defeating Indoor Singles champion Claire Duke from Victoria
5/9:10/4:2/0.
The Mens Pairs Final will kick start the finals day and Barrie Lester/Nathan Rice will take on Brett
Duprez/Kelvin Kerkow.
The finals of the Ladies Singles and the Mens Singles will be over the Internet on a LIVE scoreboard –
updated every end later today on the Tweed Heads Bowls
Club website.
