ARU congratulates Queen's Birthday Honours Recipients


Australian Rugby Australian Rugby Union Managing Director & CEO Gary Flowers today extended his congratulations to members of the Australian Rugby community who received Queen’s Birthday Honours at the weekend for services to Rugby Union.

“On behalf of the Australian Rugby community I’d like to congratulate David Brockhoff, Phil Harry, Peter Allen, Glen Millar and John Muir on this outstanding achievement,” Mr Flowers said.

“These prestigious awards not only recognise the tremendous contribution each of these individuals has made to Rugby Union in Australia, but also the high regard in which they are held by their colleagues and the community, who nominated them for an honour.”

The five members of the Australian Rugby community to receive Queen’s Birthday Honours for services to Rugby Union are:

Dr Peter Allen of Linden Park in South Australia, who was awarded the Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for service to science in the area of pest animal management through a range of research and administrative roles, and to Rugby Union football. Dr Allen played Rugby for Adelaide University, Old Collegians and South Australia and was President of the South Australian Rugby Union from 1989 to 1992.

Classic Wallaby Mr David Brockhoff, who was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for service to Rugby Union football as a player, coach, administrator and mentor. Mr Brockhoff played eight Tests for Australia from 1949-1951 and went on to coach the national side from 1974 to 1979.

Former ARU President Mr Phil Harry, who was awarded the Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for service to Rugby Union football as a player and in a range of executive roles, and to the community through support for charitable organisations. Mr Harry served as ARU President from 1994 to 2001.

Mr Glen Millar of Seaview Downs in South Australia, who was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for service to Rugby Union football as a coach, player and office bearer, and to the community through local government. Mr Millar is a Life Member of Brighton Rugby Club, the South Australian Rugby Union and the South Australian Schools Rugby Union.

Mr Andrew (John) Muir of Hamilton in Queensland, who was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for service to Rugby Union football through the development of the sport in country areas of Queensland, and to the community through contributions to the Scots PGC College. Mr Muir is a Life Member of the Queensland and Queensland Country Rugby Unions and also served as President of the QLD Country Rugby Union.

Mr Flowers also extended his congratulations to Classic Wallaby Mr Geoffrey Vaughan from Upper Beaconsfield in Victoria, who was awarded the Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) for service to scientific research and development.
