Swiss roll Togo

FIFA World Cup 2006 Switzerland have enjoyed a tough victory overnight in the world cup, prevailing 2-0 over African nation Togo in their Group G clash.

The victory for the Swiss side lifts them to the top of the Group G table, level with Korea, the side that Switzerland will meet in their final group match on June 24.

The result brought less positive news for Togo, becoming the second African nation, coupled with the Ivory Coast to be eliminated from the race to qualify for the second round.

The win for Switzerland came courtesy of a 16th minute goal to Alexander Frei, as well as the sealer, which came three minutes from full-time as Tranquillo Barnetta launched a powerful strike into the back of the net.

Togo fought tirelessly to work their way back in the contest after Barnetta fired in a cross which in turn found the back of the net following an impressive strike from Frei.

Emmanual Abayador and Thomas Dossevi had a plethora of chances between the two, as they menaced the Swiss defence, yet failed to covert.

The second half was similar to the first, as the Swiss sat back in defence and remained cool under pressure from the Togolese attack, and remained content to hurt Togo on the counter.

Barnetta then put the result beyond doubt in the 87th minute, with a fierce shot finding the goal after cannoning in off the upright.
