Saville's Golden Walk

Commonwealth Games 2006 @ Sports Australia Jane Saville has won her third Commonwealth Games Gold Medal after smashing a Games record in the 20km walk at the Docklands this morning.

Saville, who was the Australian Flag Bearer for the Opening Ceremony, capped off a remarkable few days when she crossed the line in one hour 32 minutes and 46 seconds, with her sister, Natalie taking home the silver medal.

It was to be another Australian clean sweep, as Cheryl Webb, in her first games, grabbed the Bronze. All three walkers beat the previous Games record.

Saville easily defended her crown from Manchester four years ago, and made it three golds from three games, dating right back to her Gold Medal performance in Kuala Lumpur for the 10km walk.

After a measured start, the Australians worked in tandem to take the lead, as the older Saville made it to the front and never relinquished the position.

Natalie Saville’s silver was her first medal at a Commonwealth Games meet, surpassing the fourth she claimed in Manchester in 2002.

The 31 year-olds victory will put to rest the horrors of the 2000 Olympics when she was disqualified only meters from entering the stadium after an illegal walk gave her the red card and ultimately cost her an Olympic Gold.

"You haven't won until you've crossed the line and the judges have given the all clear, I had one warning but I was quietly confident I could get through it," A pleased Saville said.
