Aussies extend unbeaten run

Commonwealth Games 2006 @ Sports Australia The Australian netball team has stretched its run of wins at these Commonwealth Games to two, after defeating Barbados 70-27 at the State Netball and Hockey Centre yesterday afternoon.

After opening their account with a win over Wales last Friday with very much an experimental line up, a more experienced team was put out on court by Coach Norma Plummer for this match.

First half saw the Australian forward pack run rings around the Barbadian defence, a team which not much was known about leading into these games and this meant Plummer went into this match very little information about the opposition.

Australia went into the main break, leading Barbados 38-12.

Second half was virtually a repeat of the first and the Barbadians were left to lick their wounds as they were completely outplayed in every department against an Australian side that continues to smash anything in front of it.

Shooting wise for Australia, Susan Pratley followed on from her superb debut against Wales, to shoot 20 goals from 21 attempts at 95% accuracy and Cath Cox provided excellent support after shooting 30/37 at 81%.

For the Barbadians, only Lydia Bishop 12/14 at 85% was able to perform creditably against the Australian defensive trio of Susan Fuhrmann, Bianca Chatfield and Alison Broadbent.

Best player on court was 19 year old Fuhrmann, who has made a meal of her opponents in her first two open internationals is viewed by Plummer was a long term prospect to replace Liz Ellis in the back half.

Next for the Australia is a game against Samoa tomorrow, with centre pass scheduled for 3:00pm.
