Van Der Kuyp dream over

Commonwealth Games 2006 @ Sports Australia Australia’s Kyle Van Der Kuyp has failed to qualify for the 110-metre hurdles final after a disappointing run in the heats this morning at the MCG.

The 34 year-old from Melbourne failed to qualify for the 2002 Games in Manchester, but won a spot on the 2006 team by winning the event at the national championships.

Running in heat two, Van Der-Kuyp was fourth, crossing at 14.22 seconds - 0.30 outside his best time for the season and 0.83 outside his personal best.

Jamaican Maurice Wignall was the fastest qualifier, crossing the line at 13.34, followed by Scotland's Chris Baillie crossing at 13.44 - a personal best - and England's Andrew Turner in 13.62.

Meanwhile, Australian Scott Martin has recovered from last night’s failure to win shot-put gold, by qualifying in second position for tonight’s men’s discuss final.

Australia's Tristan Thomas ran third in that heat to qualify in 49.88 while national champion Brendan Cole ran 49.85 but Elliott Wood was eliminated after almost falling at the last hurdle.

In the long jump Maurice Lapierre automatically qualified for the final by passing the qualifying mark of 7.90 metres and he was soon joined by fellow Aussies Tim Parravicini and John Thornell.

In the men's decathlon Australia's Jason Dudley looks assured of at least a bronze medal given he holds down third place by a massive 322 points with seven of the ten events now completed.
