Aussies destroy Singapore in moral boosting victory

Commonwealth Games 2006 @ Sports Australia Australia has posted a resounding 107-19 victory against a hapless Singaporean side at the State Netball and Hockey Centre on Thursday afternoon.

Following yesterdays surprise tie against World number three Jamaica, the Australian side entered the contest needing to win by a grand amount and rely on goal difference to avoid the might of New Zealand in the Semi Finals, racing to a mammoth 45 point lead just before the break as Australia fought to keep alive hopes of an appearance in the Gold Medal match.

The reigning champions dominated the contest early overwhelming an inexperienced and undersized Singaporean side, who struggled at times to string a set of passes together, whilst consistently lacking attacking flair when moving across the court.

Suzanne Fuhrmann put in a solid performance for the Australians, with her towering presence in defence assisting to keep the diminutive Singaporeans side at bay, however, Singaporean attacker Hui Yan Tan was a solid contributor for Singapore with nine goals.

Sydney Swifts goal shooter Catherine Cox played an important role for the home side scoring an outstanding 43 goals during the first three quarters proving to be a handful, whilst Megan Dehn-Anderson contributed during the rout, scoring 35 goals with a field percentage of 83.3%.

Entering the final term, the home side held an 80-13 lead and continued to dominate in their quest to amass a total in excess of 100. Despite the lop sided score line, the Singaporeans were proving to be a handful for the home side, before team captain and Melbournian Sharelle McMahon scored Australia’s landmark 100th goal, earning the Australians the honour of being the first side in the tournament to reach the milestone.

Australia was relentless in its push for a percentage boosting victory as they placed Singapore under siege, scoring another seven goals in a frantic final few minutes to ensure that Jamaica were left with a difficult task against Samoa later this evening.
