Waratahs name Hoiles at Openside for Cheetahs Clash

Tooheys New Rugby Super 14 Stephen Hoiles will start at openside flanker for the NSW Waratahs against the Cheetahs from South Africa at Aussie Stadium on Friday night.

Hoiles will replace vice-captain Phil Waugh who will play off the bench.

“This is a proactive move by the coaching staff and I’m fully supportive of it,” said Waugh.

“Ewen started managing the workload of players well last year and it’s crucial to keep players fresh come the backend of the season.”

Daniel Vickerman will assume the vice-captaincy in the run-on side.

“This is a long, hard campaign for our forwards and by using them wisely we should have more intensity on the field for 80 minutes,” said McKenzie.

“It think this is the mark of a mature squad when you can make these player management decisions and still field a strong side.

“Stephen Hoiles can play in all three back row positions and the impact he’s had off the bench has been significant.”

As expected Daniel Halangahu has been installed at flyhalf after Mat Rogers was ruled out with a rib injury.

Rocky Elsom makes his long awaited comeback from suspension on the bench which carries an extra forward this week.
