Additional matches confirmed for Matildas

The Australian Matildas will meet Mexico in two more international matches over the coming week as part of their preparations for July’s Asian Women’s Championship to be played in Adelaide.

The two matches are in addition to the historic first match for the women’s national team at the Melbourne Cricket Ground which will be played as a double header prior to the Socceroos v Greece match on Thursday.

The three match series will take place in Melbourne with the Matildas to meet the Mexicans at Bob Jane Stadium on Sunday, before the final match at Anderson Reserve, Port Melbourne on Tuesday 30 May.

"The players have spent a lot of time in camp in recent months but have had very little game time, so this series will be vital as we start to build more momentum towards the World Cup qualifiers in Adelaide,” said Matildas coach Tom Sermanni.

"Mexico has traditionally been a very strong opponent and I’m sure all three matches will be quite tough and intense for both teams.”

The 2006 AFC Women's Championships in Adelaide, July 16-30, also double as the qualifiers for the 2007 Women's World Championship to be held in China.

In addition to China receiving automatic entry to the FIFA Women’s World Cup as host, the Asian region receives another two full spots, plus a third team will play off against a team from CONCACAF.

Australia and Mexico have met on four previous occasions with the Matildas winning three and Mexico winning one match. Australia are currently ranked 15th and Mexico 26th.
