ARU and QRU hold constructive discussions

Australian Rugby Queensland Rugby Chairman Mr Peter Lewis and Australian Rugby Union (ARU) CEO and Managing Director Mr Gary Flowers today issued the following joint statement:

Representatives of the ARU and QRU met in Brisbane today to discuss the issues and processes governing the contracting of rugby players in Australia.

The scheduled meeting between ARU CEO Gary Flowers and Queensland Rugby Chairman Peter Lewis also discussed recent public criticism by Mr Lewis of the current player contracting process.

Mr Lewis outlined his concerns and undertook to prepare a detailed presentation to the ARU on possible reforms.

"Peter left me in no doubt that Queensland Rugby had genuine concerns about the current process for contracting players," Mr Flowers said.

"At the same time, Peter was left in no doubt that our preference is to conduct these debates in the appropriate forums, whether that be the ARU Board or the regular meetings of Super 14 Chief Executives, and that while colourful and emotive language may grab headlines, it also has the potential to damage corporate relationships and image."

Mr Lewis said he was pleased to have had the opportunity to outline the QRU's case in what was a professional and amicable meeting.

"Queensland Rugby is on the move and I'm impatient to pick up the pace," Mr Lewis said.

"I'm passionate about Queensland Rugby and my friends tell me I tend to be fairly direct when I'm pursuing an objective," Mr Lewis said.

"However Gary and I were able to settle any misunderstandings pretty quickly today and I'm sure our relationship will continue to grow, to the benefit of both organisations."

The mood of the meeting was further brightened by the news that star prop Rodney Blake had signed to stay with the Reds for another two years.

"This is positive news for Queensland and Australian Rugby, and hopefully there will be much more to come," Mr Flowers said.

Mr Lewis said the Blake announcement will be welcomed by Reds fans as another sign that the Queensland revival is definitely under way.

"This was vital for us. Rodney's decision will send a signal to other Reds players, our fans and our sponsors that we're on the right track."
