Blues smash Warriors
Sunday November 29, 2009
New South Wales has smashed Western Australia by eight wickets inside three days of the Weet-Bix Sheffield Shield at the WACA Ground in Perth today.
The Blues’ quickly gunned down the victory target of 103 shortly after the lunch interval on day three as Phil Jaques (54 not out) rediscovered some form that once had him amongst the national squad.
Usman Khawaja (41) combined with Jaques to guide New South Wales to its first points in Shield season 2009/10 with an 86-run second wicket stand following the early loss of Phil Hughes when he guided his first ball to Shaun Marsh in the slips.
The Khawaja and Jaques partnership began slowly but as lunch approached they lifted the run rate dramatically with cover drives and mid wicket pull shots finding the boundary rope.
New South Wales went to lunch 36 runs short of the target at 1-67, but lost Khawaja (lbw to Coetzee) in the short session after the break.
Doug Bollinger, released on Thursday from the Australian squad in Brisbane, claimed man of the match honours with two brilliant bowling stints in collecting eight wickets – five of those in the second innings.
Earlier, Western Australia resumed on 7-231 with Justin Coetzee and Steve Magoffin unbeaten and looking for any runs possible to build a competitive target for the Blues to chase.
However, those plans were torn apart as Magoffin edged through to keeper Daniel Smith in the second over of the day, while Coetzee nicked to Hughes who juggled it at first slip in the following over.
The Warriors’ second innings ended four overs later on 9-245 when Michael Hogan ducked into a good length ball and was forced to retire hurt, leaving Brad Knowles unbeaten on six.
Ford Ranger Cup matches are next on the agenda for both teams this Saturday. New South Wales travels to Launceston to take on Tasmania, while Western Australia hosts Victoria at Bunbury.
