Cosgrove the star in Redbacks win
Mark Cosgrove's maiden ING Cup century has guided South Australia to their first
one day domestic victory this season with a comprehensive six-wicket victory in
Adelaide this evening.
The Redbacks were set a target 250, and despite a mid-innings slump, the home
side were able to cruise home with five overs to spare and only four wickets
down.
The star of the night was Cosgrove, with his damaging innings of 109
compiled in only 102 balls and including five sixes. It eclipsed his previous best
of 73 and silenced his critics on return from suspension due to weight problems.
Matthew Elliott helped kick-start the innings with 63 in his first home game
at his new state, while Callum Ferguson notched up an unbeaten 28 in his 100-run
stand with Cosgrove.
The win lifts the Redbacks off the foot of the table with their first win,
after falling to New South Wales two weeks ago. Queensland fall down to fifth on
net run rate.
Adding injury to insult for the Bulls as James Hopes was carried off the
ground by medical staff in the final half-hour of the match with a dislocated
right shoulder.
In the chase of 250, Matthew Elliott and Graham Manou set South Australia on track
right from the start. The pair knocked up a stand of 50 within 10 overs.
When Manou (24) was caught behind, the all too familiar dominoes effect was
narrowly avoided - Greg Blewett dropped the next ball by Mitchell at fine leg.
Elliott passed his 50 in 70 balls as the Redbacks passed 100 in the 22nd over
and on track with only two wickets lost.
Though, when the former Victorian was caught behind at 3-124 for 63, Darren
Lehmann followed suit the next over, beaten for pace by Mitchell and in turn,
top edging a hook shot to Symonds at square-leg for two.
When Callum Ferguson joined Mark Cosgrove at the crease, the scoring was
hindered slightly courtesy of tight bowling by Hauritz and Symonds.
The required rate slipped above six as the Bulls took the upper hand - until
Hopes left the field with a dislocated shoulder after an awkward fall in the
field.
Cosgrove passed 50 in 62 balls and his confidence sky-rocketed - taking 13
off one Symonds over, including a towering six over long off.
A cardinal sin by Hauritz in bowling a no-ball was met with open arms by
Cosgrove when he made use of the free hit, slog-sweeping his fourth six of the
innings.
It was party time when Cosgrove whacked his fifth six of the innings,
followed shortly by his 100 in only 97 balls, as the Redbacks cruised home.
Earlier in the day, Queensland captain Jimmy Maher won the toss and on a
pitch with a slightly green tinge, elected to bat first.
Maher survived a confident first-over LBW shout by Gillespie, and that failed
to deter his concentration, as he blasted 49 in a 72-run opening stand with
Hopes (31).
When Hopes fished at a ball outside off and subsequently nicking the ball to
keeper Manou, the promotion of Andrew Bichel to number three failed - the
veteran bowler skying his first ball to Ferguson at square leg.
Queensland won the battle of tactics early, when the Redbacks'
hierarchy subbed fast-bowler Paul Rofe off for Ryan Harris before he had finished his 10
overs.

When Maher was dismissed one run short of 50, the Bulls fell to 3-96.
Clinton Perren steadied the ship with 62 (from 87 balls) in a 49-run
partnership
with Andrew Symonds (33). The stand was snapped when Symonds miscued a
pull shot, with Cosgrove pulling in a superb running catch at long-on.
Craig Philipson was deceived in both flight and behind the stumps - Manou
stumping him for 20 off the bowling of Cullen.
When Perren was caught brilliantly by Elliott in the 48th over at 7-227, a
valuable unbeaten partnership of 22 from 16 balls between Hartley and Hauritz
guided the Bulls to a competitive score of 249.
Cullen was the pick of the bowlers, collecting 3-44 off nine overs, while
Mark Cleary took 2-48 from his 10, after snagging 2-23 in his first spell of
seven overs.
