Houston Released by NSW Rugby
NSW Rugby has released promising back rower Leroy Houston from the last year of his contract.
“I love playing Rugby but I’ve struggled a bit with the professional environment so I’m taking some time out,” said Leroy.
“Everyone’s been really understanding and I’d like to thank the Waratahs for their patience and my family for all their support.
“I’ll be back one day but for now it’s just park Rugby for me.”
NSWRU Chief Executive Officer Fraser Neill said Leroy presented a letter of resignation last night with his family and management by his side.
“Leroy’s made some tough admissions and last night he made a tough decision,” said Mr Neill.
“Leroy’s a fantastic talent and we’ve put an extraordinary amount of time and effort into helping him cope but it’s clear now that the best thing for him is to take a step back for a while.
“You can’t help but like Leroy, and we wish him well over the next period of time.”
Mr Neill and Leroy also acknowledged the work of Ted Bennett, formerly involved with the Justice Department in New Zealand, who was assigned to Leroy earlier this year.
“Ted specialises in helping young Islander and Maori kids like Leroy and he made enormous strides in improving Leroy’s literacy skills and general education.
“It was a big team effort to help Leroy and we’re glad that he’s heading in the right direction, albeit not with the Waratahs for the time being.”
The Waratahs will continue to provide medical and counselling support for Leroy in the short-term.
