Mason out as teams prepare for Big Battle

Rugby League Tri-Nations 2006 Willie Mason has been ruled out of tomorrow night's big clash between Trans-Tasman rivals New Zealand and Australia, to take place at the Telstra Dome.

Mason is continuing to suffer from headaches after a heavy hit with All Black counterpart David Kidwell during the first game of the series played in Auckland last weekend.

After there final training today Kangaroos team doctor, Hugh Hazard ruled Mason out. Hazard saying it would be too much of a risk for Mason to play, “He had initial improvement but then with training he had a recurrence of his headaches and dizziness, it hasn't settled down sufficiently to allow us to safely play him, so he's been ruled out,”

Mason’s replacement in the starting line-up is Mark O'Meley while Sam Thaiday has been promoted to the interchange bench and is set to make his international debut alongside other Kangaroo debutant, Anthony Tupou.

Australian coach Ricky Stuart made it clear he was not worried about losing Mason as long as he is right for the end of the series, “It's disappointing for Willie but we've got to look after his welfare. It's not about one game this series; it's about being healthy at the back end of it.”

Mason is expected to be right to return for the Aussies when they take on Great Britain in a fortnight’s time.

All is well in the New Zealand camp how ever and New Zealand coach Brian McClennan is looking forward to a big night at the Dome saying, “I hope that it stays confrontational because I think that's the difference between an international match and an NRL match.”

“I think it's really important for the fans that there is that element of physicality in the match. I think that is what the fans are turning up to see, so I hope it stays a little bit like it was last week, just for the sake of the international game,” McClennan said.

Kick-off between Australia and New Zealand tomorrow night from Telstra Dome at 8pm (AEST). After the game be sure to check www.sportsaustralia.com for all the wash up from what is sure to be a fierce battle.
