Tawqeet wins, new favourite for the Cup

Spring Racing Carnival Dwayne Dunn yesterday produced a magnificent ride to claim the Caulfield Cup upon, Tawqeet.

David Hayes yesterday received the best birthday present possible as the trainer turns 44 today, yesterday he claimed his second Caulfield Cup after Fraar in 1993.

Tawqeet won the $2.5 million BMW Caulfield Cup and was always in contention from the get go. Dunn slotted him back midfield and followed the pace set by Our Smoking Joe before making a run down the straight only having to come out to pass one horse in the last 100m, that being the second place Aqua d'Amore.

Dunn knew after the race that his job was only half done as the horse was sent from Britain to Australia earlier in the year to have a shot at the Melbourne Cup at Flemington on November the 7th.

“He was 60 per cent fit when he won the Metrop, and he's 80 per cent fit now, We're looking forward to the two miles (of the Melbourne Cup).” Dunn said after the race.

Tawqeet immediatley after the race soared into Melbourne Cup favourtism, at $6 by TAB Sportsbet.

Racing Victoria handicaper Greg Carpenter saying last night, “I will definitely be giving Tawqeet a penalty but I want to think about it for the next day or so and make a final decision Monday morning,”

David Hayes thought his horse was lucky saying, “I thought he needed quite a few breaks in this race to win, and he got them. That's the luck of racing sometimes.”

Delta Blues finished third followed by Activation back in fourth place, while favourite going into the race Sphenophyta was back in fifth spot and never really looked like a main threat to the eventual winner, Tawqeet.
