Warriors fightback but Tigers still in control
Western Australia has shown some fight in chasing Tasmania’s huge first innings total late on the second
day of the Pura Cup match in Perth.
At the close, the Warriors were 1-133, still trailing by 421 runs, with Captain Justin Langer not out on
83, and Shaun Marsh unbeaten on 39.
Langer raced to his half-century in 49 balls and looks set for another first-class hundred early on day
three. Marsh played the anchor role but unleashed in the last hour.
Earlier, Tasmania declared an hour and 14 minutes into the second session with a mammoth 7-553. Tim
Paine and George Bailey stood out on day two with both reaching milestones, while Warriors spinner Aaron
Heal claimed a career-best five-wicket haul.
For Paine, who made 215, it was the right-handed opening batsman’s highest first-class score in five
matches, easily beating his previous high of 36 set against New South Wales during last season’s match
at Hobart.
His partner in the 118-run fourth wicket stand, George Bailey, was also amongst the milestones, reaching
1,000 first-class career runs when he got to 26.
Tasmania began the second day where they left off, scoring runs and not conceding any wickets. Only one
wicket fell in the extended opening session, that of Bailey stumped by keeper Luke Ronchi for 55 when he
played and missed at Heal’s bowling in the 113th over.
Paine had the duty of pushing the Tigers past 350, in the 97th over, before reaching 150, nine overs
later, with his 24th shot to the boundary rope.
Tasmania reached 3-400 in the 112th over, while Bailey posted his fourth half-century off 83 balls,
scoring his 11th four with relative ease.
With lunch on the horizon, Paine edged closer to his maiden double century, while Daniel Marsh quietly
defended. At lunch Tasmania were 4-447 with Paine unbeaten on 185 and Marsh on 21. Heal was the best of
the bowlers with 2-62 from 19 overs, while Ervine also had two wickets from yesterday’s opening day.
For the first time in the match, the sun was visible after lunch and shined brightly. Tasmania went
past 450 in the first over after the main interval.
Paine brought up his maiden 200, off 401 balls, with a cut shot that went straight through Justin
Langer’s hands at first slip. Marsh reached his half-century in the next over and took the Tigers over
500. He fell two balls later with a slog sweep only to be bowled by Heal.
Paine (215) was eventually dismissed when he charged down the wicket and drove straight to Brett Dorey
at long-off. Heal had four wickets, while the Tigers were 6-514.
Heal, playing in just his fourth first-class match, had Geeves stumped six overs later. Geeves had
smashed one six in racing to 20 and tried for a second only to come undone.
The Warriors batted for 37 minutes before tea, reaching 1-22 and losing Rogers on the final ball of the
session, caught behind by Sean Clingeleffer for seven.
Play resumes tomorrow at 10:30am local time.
