Wallabies name 45-man Training Squad

Australian Rugby The Wallabies have today named a 45-man Training Squad in preparation for the Spring Tour in November, with back-to-back Tests against France in Marseille, England at Twickenham, Ireland at Lansdowne Road and Wales in Cardiff.

The Training Squad will begin preparations for the tour in their home states from next week, before a Wallaby Spring Tour Squad of around 30 will be named on October 10.

Seven members of the Australian Under 21 representative team, including hooker Tatafu Polota-Nau, flanker Leroy Houston, flyhalf Scott Daruda and outside backs Digby Ioane and Cameron Shepherd have been named in the Training Squad, while 37 players named have already been part of the Wallaby Squad this season.

In addition to the Australian Under 21 representatives, prop Greg Holmes and scrum half Brett Sheehan have also been included in Training Squad, as well as openside flanker David Croft.

Wallabies Coach Eddie Jones says the selection of the 45-man Training Squad is the next step in preparing for the Spring Tour.

"We've selected a squad of 45 because there are still a number of players we want to have a look at medically and physically, before finalising a group for the Spring Tour," said Jones.

With 10 players already making their Test debut this season, the most since the first year of professionalism in 1996 when 12 players debuted, a further nine uncapped players have been named in the Training Squad, with the Wallabies to play four Tests, and Australia A to play a match against the French Barbarians in Bordeaux.

"The Australia A match against the French Barbarians on November 1 will be another good opportunity to develop some of the younger players."

The 45 players named in the Training Squad will now undertake strength and conditioning and specific skills training under the guidance of Wallaby Coaching staff in Sydney, Brisbane and Canberra from Monday.
