Victoria strikes fear into U21 opponents
U21 Nationals Day One Review
Victoria has gotten off to a soaring start in the 2006 U/21 national netball titles, striking fear into the
hearts of opposing teams with a comprehensive 74–34 victory over tournament hosts and 2005 runners up, South
Australia.
It was the second victory of the day for Victoria, which boasts Australian U/21 captain Julie Prendergast,
and rising stars Johannah Curran, Renae Hallinan, and Caitlin Thwaites.
Earlier in the day they defeated Tasmania, 69–37.
Defending champions Western Australia also got their campaign off to a winning start, when they
comprehensively outplayed ACT earlier in the day, the final score being 59–38.
They continued their winning streak in the second round, defeating NSW, 68–52.
It was a good first day for Queensland who came out victorious in both their matches, defeating South
Australia, 45–40, and Tasmania, 49–42.
Some intriguing battles are set to take place on day two of the nationals, with NSW and Victoria meeting,
igniting an intense interstate netball rivalry.
South Australia will be looking to salvage some pride in front of their home crowd when they face the
unenviable task of fronting up against Western Australia, while the ACT will be searching for its first win,
in matches against Victoria and Queensland.
