VFL Wrap - Zebras claim third consecutive premiership

Sandringham (13.13.91) defeated Geelong (11.7.73) at MC Labour Park

Footy '06 @ Sports Australia Sandringham were looking to create history by becoming the first team since Port Melbourne in 1982 to claim three consecutive VFA/VFL premierships and despite a last quarter fight back by a determined Geelong outfit it was the Zebras who were victorious at the final siren.

Geelong were hoping to add to the premiership they won back in 2002 but this never eventuated after an inspiring ten minutes period in the final quarter that featured two goals from Sandringham defender Andy Biddlecombe that spoiled the Cat’s hope of taking some silverware back to Skilled Stadium.

Nick Sautner kicked three goals and Phil Read was awarded the Norm Goss medal for his best on ground performance for the Zebras.

Earlier in the day Box Hill Hawks (10.11.71) defeated Williamstown (8.11.59) in the reserve grade grand final.

Box Hill pulled off an amazing victory over a Williamstown outfit that went through all of this season undefeated and featured several exciting youngsters including A Todd medallist David Stretton.

Anthony Marguccio kicked four goals and Patrick Hassett was best on ground for the Hawks.
